Thrifty Under 50 Challenge

Thriftiness is increasingly important for many families this year who are feeling the financial pinch (stupid economy). Instead of enjoying time with family and getting into the holiday spirit, they are concerned about how they will pay the bills. A good way to relieve the pinch? Make your own gifts!

YouCanMakeThis.com creator Kim Christopherson decided to create a contest where fifty people would make as many presents as they could for under $50. The goal of Thrifty Under 50 is to challenge the participants to come up with new ways to make homemade gifts that will be appreciated, without spending much money.

“We're trying to get people to think a little differently this year than in years past,” says Christopherson. “We want to encourage people to utilize what they already have on hand. To be inventive and creative and dig into those fabric stashes and figure out ways to repurpose old items, and use up what they already have.”

YouCanMakeThis.Com is the perfect company to issue this challenge. If you haven't already checked them out, do yourself a favor and hightail it over there. They have an abundance of high quality, easy-to-understand guides, which are all available as downloadable patterns. They offer directions for toys, pillows, games, purses, pillows, etc. You name it, they have it. One of our favorites is the play food pictured to the right. How great is that?

The participants of the Thifty Under 50 challenge are posting their completed projects on the YouCanMakeThis blog, so we can all see their progress. Grab your scissors and your mod podge and head over to grab some great ideas.
